When Craig, 45 yrs old, was diagnosed with diabetes in 2020 he recalled not receiving much support in managing the disease. There wasn’t enough awareness about diabetic diets and on follow ups with his doctor.
“I received general guidelines like ‘don’t eat carbs, don’t eat sugar and lose weight.’ I loved my subs and roasts. How was I going to control my elevated sugar?” I enrolled in a nutrition program and that was the turning point in my life.”
He was put on a diet that involved eating complex carbohydrates, proteins, lots of fiber. With creative healthy options for snacks and an allowance for his favorite roast once a month. Craig could feel his anxiety melting away. He became stronger, healthier, and his sugar levels which were at 250 mg/dL came down to an average of 170mg/dL.
“A major part of my progress was tracking my food intake with the tweak &eat app. The break up of carbs, proteins, fats and fiber and the personalized comment that accompanied my food pic, helped me make actual changes. I now include whole grains and seeds in my diet as per the advice. Frankly I don’t really feel like I am a diabetic.”
